i never really think much about my job. not the clerical stuff i do on the side, but my radio job. my mother and her boyfriend came to visit today and they were just in awe about everything we've got going on here. granted, our studios are newer, larger, and more technologically enhanced than most. but still ...
is it a bad thing that it just doesn't really seem like a big deal to me?
don't get me wrong. i absolutely, positively, without a doubt love my job. working in radio is what keeps me going through the week - knowing that i have my show to look forward to and spend time here. i'm interviewing with another station next week that could potentially give me a solid career position in radio. i don't take any of it for granted, because not only do i love my job, but i know there's hundreds of others that would do anything to get my position and it could be taken away from me in an instant.
you really have to know what you're doing these days to get into radio. not only are there next to no positions open due to the growing desire for automation (cost-cutting measure), but once you're in a station, it's almost like a grandfathered position - unless you mess up. now, here at my station, you have to REALLY mess up in order to get fired. but i always worry i'm going to do something ridiculous and let something slip. so i'm very big on being conscientious about my job.
i've been working in radio so long (since i was eighteen, so 2003) that when i see a board, or a station, i still get excited - but it doesn't overwhelm me anymore. part of me still almost wishes i could feel that way, because by not, i almost feel that i'm becoming too ... i guess you could say too comfortable with my profession. but then i remember that technology is always evolving and there is still so much to learn, from transmitter work to EAS to programming.
i try to be modest and tell people my job's really not that difficult, and that there's not much to it when they compliment me about being able to handle everything at once. however, i suppose maybe they're right. it is a tough job - i'm just at the point where it's not tough for me. that, i guess, is a good and bad thing. for now, i think i'll take it as a good thing ... as i'm really looking forward to advancing in my field, where i'm more than sure i'll get thrown right back to not being so comfortable in my position again. :)
