one thing i suppose that is good about not having a working iPod at the moment is that i actually have to listen to the radio in the car. now, you would think because i work in radio, i actually listen to it all the time. not so. if i have a working cd player or iPod, i generally plan my music ahead of time to whatever i'm in the mood for that day. (considering i have a rather large spectrum of music i listen to, it varies day to day.)
along with listening to the radio in the great state of new hampshire is the lack of choices you have on said radio. up here, we pretty much have a choice between classic rock or country, with one or two pop stations and boston's "the river" piped in on a translator. granted, i love classic rock, i'm pretty okay with country, and even pop doesn't really bother me anymore. but not being able to listen to any of my music on demand has been humbling, and sometimes disappointing. i feel i've become spoiled.
although, i must say that listening to the radio allows me to remind myself of music i do indeed enjoy, but simply do not own, and then i become surprised that i don't own this music, and then i go and find a way to acquire it. tonight's pick was the beatles - the long and winding road. it was one of my favourite songs about eight or nine years ago that somehow i have neglected throughout time.
but then, one runs into the risk of getting the music, listening to it several times and becoming burned on it again. the whole point of radio is to burn the crap out of new music and get you so sick of it so that you won't want to listen to any other station that plays the song. you can kind of do that to yourself too. have you ever bought a new album and just listened to it over and over again, only to find three days later you want nothing to do with it? that's burning yourself.
so, i suppose if you drive and only listen to satellite radio, cd's or your iPod, try listening to your terrestrial radio for a day.* see what comes up that you hadn't really remembered you liked, but tread carefully!
*this is not an advertisement to listen to me on the radio, i promise; merely an observation.
